Hi smoothbrain here, could someone recommend a good HP Lovecraft for someone with not the best vocabulary/knowledge of his canon?
Or maybe a book based on some of his work?

Was pulp era cosmic horror and later Lovecraftian fiction merely a metaphysical extension of the influence of fin de siècle Victorian aestheticism upon weird fiction at its origin point in the gaslight era, and would it be fair to say that contemporary antinatalism as expressed by Ligotti et al which is largely drawn from cosmicism is similarly a moralization of a deliberately amoral aesthetic theory? I don't mean to commit a genetic fallacy by suggesting that that is some refutation of antinatalism. And how can we interpret the recent moral outrage over Lovecraft's racism in light of the moral genealogy of cosmicism? Isn't the entire premise of cosmicism predicated upon aestheticism, which divorces considerations of art from morality? Does that represent a greater misunderstanding of cosmicism on its own terms?

I keep on trying to read the first story of the lovecraft book I got, Call of Cthulhu, but I always get bored 2 pages later, and stop. I thought it was ADD, but I think I realized its just boring. Barely anything happens on a single page. A description of an item and how scare it is to the protagonist can take up half a page. Describing how unexpected and scary something is to another character is repeated many time in the story. I have only gotten to page 10 out of 25 and I just dont want to do it anymore. I have made significant progress in Brothers Karamazov and Don Quixote, and yet I can't read lovecraft. I dont think its ADD because I can read other books mostly fine, its just that this book is boring. So unless you guys tell me that Call of Cthulhu is significantly worse than other stories and that there are other better stories I should read, I am just not going to read Lovecraft anymore. Are there other horror books you guys recommend?

I bought this dudes entire collection. Is it worth finishing every single one of his short stories? I found that after reading like 20 or so, there is some link between a few. But some are just a bit dull. Should I plough through it or just go straight to his novels/novellas?

im a young student who has had literature basically ruined by school forcing me to read textbooks and novels I dont really care for, although some of them were pretty good. I wan't to get back into reading and read as a passtime as a more productive hobby then video games/ consuming mindless media. although whenever i sit down with a book i actually want to read i begin to feel like i need to get it done and not like im actually enjoying myself, i begin to get distracted and play video games / go on social media because im not getting into the book or enjoying it as i should...

any advice for becoming an avid reader / books that are easy to read yet hold meaningful text?

>pic related i recently bought a book of his stories out of desire to read, have yet to open it though :(

So I've just read a few of his stories and must say... what's the appeal? The dude is just a racist asshole who always wrote the same bland stories. Some guy finds some shit, doesn't really describe it, just says how spooky it is and then goes insane. I could write way better stories than THAT! And it's always a guy! I mean, not ONCE does this piece of shit give an important role to a woman. Why are people so obsessed with him? He contributes nothing to the horror genre besides toxicity. In my opinion trash like this should be banned or at least edited to adjust it to an age other than the fucking stone age.

I am not an orthodox disciple of religion, but I deem it dangerous to tamper with any system so manifestly beneficial to morality. Whatever may be the faults of the church, it has never yet been surpassed or nearly equalled as an agent for the promotion of virtue. And the same thing applies to our present social system. It has its defects, but is evidently a natural growth, and better fitted to preserve an approximate civilization than any Utopian scheme conjured up over night by some artificially thinking radical.
