As long as the niche authors continue to find a place among all this cultural posturing, I welcome the unending amorphous state of any potential future canon.

John Norman. That's what I'd guess you want to aim for. Just the right touch of sales appeal.

I like rating the raunchy by four tiers.

Tier one: sex is not a part of the story. It might be out there, somewhere. Characters might notice each other, children may appear from nowhere, and the species we see be all down with the birds and the bees and moving along, obviously.

But you won't find it in the writing.

Tier two: fade-to-black. Speaking for myself, I'm most happy writing the 'approaching second base - next scene' variety. How far along that that baseline allows for some large variation, but there should be a clear barrier between greasing the engine, and humming down the road.

Some of Gore Vidal's works can be found here ...

Tier three: ... and others of Vidal, here. John Norman does his thing in this place.

The story is not the sex, but the sex it has, and what it has is somewhat explicit. You get what the characters experience, and how, yet how that's presented can be elliptical and indirect. Expect dialogue and suggestive observations, not so much engineering details. The characters spend more time doing all sorts of things beside, before and after all the "Oh! ... Oh master! OH!" (Norman) or "Oh, yes. Oh yes! Oh - NO THAT'S THE WRONG HOLE!" (Vidal).

Tier four: pic related. I place DeSade here as well.

Other stuff happens, characters move from here to there, maybe even a touch of philosophy, no? No worries about these digressions, no one's going to confuse the story with any of that filler. Detail may vary, as does the artistry of presentation, but you'll have no doubt as to what happened in all it's glorious refrain, or grotesque deflowerings, be they physical, moral, mental, spiritual - and a side order of cheese fries please.

For writing sex stick to your market and audience, genera and style, and write to that.

Daily reminder that Paul Lucas is way ahead of y'all.

Hell, it's a series ...
