Dmitri is an all time titan of a character. An avatar of humanity's animalism and vice, copied often by the literate, but never bested.

Alyosha has definitely been better scripted in other Dusty works, though I think it's important to realize that we are catching Alyosha at the very beginning of his pure spiritual development. He is not yet its master, which could be argued to be exemplified by Zosima, but in pursuing the spirit and Zosima's philosophy/theology I believe it's heavily implied that Alyosha will surpass Zosima.

Who are you pinning as a more complete intellectual than Ivan? Actually curious, I felt he was a fair zenith for his kind. Not as fleshed out as other Dusty intellectuals, but I feel he was a stronger archetype.

>I'd throw in a consideration of the father, not as a good character, but as a decidedly and intentionally cringe one. He's still the exemplar for the word buffoon, and it's all the more striking that this sort of man actually exists. Most of us have probably met him. Alyosha may be a rarer species. I've met a share of Ivans, a half Dmitri or two, but I see Fyodor Pavlovich every day.

C&P was better, stronger themes, more complex characters, more interesting narrative arc, sure. Notes was as good in a different way. You're getting the character and the message but no substantiation, intentionally, because the character is supposed to be insubstantial, but its still palpable. There's little meat on the bone.

I had to read Kant in my intro to philosophy in community college. Granted 2/5ths of the class dropped out from the required reading he wasn't that hard to understand. Why are you all so freaked out by him?

Match the quotes with the book. No cheating.
1.
>Everybody is identical in their secret unspoken belief that way deep down they are different from everyone else.

2.
>Whenever I saw the sun, I reminded myself that I was looking at a star. One of over a hundred billion in our galaxy. A galaxy that was just one of billions of other galaxies in the observable universe. This helped me keep things in perspective.

3.
>In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him. I think it’s impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves. And then, in that very moment when I love them.... I destroy them.

4.
>I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

5.
>You are not special. You're not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else. We're all part of the same compost heap. We're all singing, all dancing crap of the world.

6.
>It strikes me profoundly that the world is more often than not a bad and cruel place.

7.
>I have no objection to any person’s religion, be it what it may, so long as that person does not kill or insult any other person, because that other person don’t believe it also. But when a man’s religion becomes really frantic; when it is a positive torment to him; and, in fine, makes this earth of ours an uncomfortable inn to lodge in; then I think it high time to take that individual aside and argue the point with him.

I'm sure you have fond memories of these stories, but adult eyes but poorly understand the vignettes that enchanted our childhood. The writing, from what you've described, would probably not be of a caliber worth rereading.

If you'd like some other fantasy recommendations, I think /lit/ would better be able to help. Do you have any genres of fantasy that you prefer? Science fiction, or maybe knights and dragons?

I've seen it argued that class distinctions are good insofar as making divisions of labor more efficient. But could we have adequate division of labor in a classless society?

why do you care if some tranny wants to read a book?
I can at least somewhat understand perhaps maybe liking a REVIEW of a book you've read yourself by someone, but to like a status update that just states that someone wants to read the book?
this raises the broader question of why have friends on a website that you should just use to catalog what you read

I buy everything I don't steal from a single charity shop and do not buy any book above 5 euro except for a collection I bought a while ago for 50. This year I'd say not above 30 euro.

>In the space of anti-Semitism, the “Jew” stands for social antagonism as such: without the Jewish intruder, the two classes would live in harmony… Thus, we can observe how the third intruding element is evental: it is not just another positive entity, but it stands for what is forever unsettling the harmony of the two, opening it up to an incessant process of re-accommodation.
