Phonics = breaking words down into their phonemes, then trying to get kids to understand how these basic phonemes sound like said aloud, so when they are learning and reading new, potentially unfamiliar words, they can “sound it out”, say it aloud and perhaps even recognize it. And vice versa, write down words they’ve heard before and know the meaning of but may not immediately know how to spell by sounding it out and transcribing what it sounds like.
