Let's talk about The Iliad. What was your favorite book? What are some major themes you observed? What did you think of it overall?

Is the moral of this story to Never Love These Hoes?

Also best translation? Only one i've ever read is the Barnes N Noble classic one done by Ennis Reese.

It's once again time for you wonderful little pseudo-intellectual faggots to brawl over the most noble of questions. Who has the best contemporary English translation: Fagles, Lattimore, or Fitzgerald?

Okay, which versions of The Iliad and The Odyssey should I read?
Does it matter all that much since it's subjective anyway; are there any I should just avoid?
Also, should I read The Odyssey before Ulysses?

General discussion too.

How important is prerequisite knowledge to the understanding of the Iliad? I know some things (the seer prophecy and the snake, the myth and reality of Troy, some relationships between characters) and just want to start reading it already.

I am about to read The Iliad but I have a question.
When I read poetry I read slowly and usually reread a poem a few times before moving onto the next in a collection. Sometimes I will stay on one and study it longer if I feel it deserves further time.

However, seeing as The Iliad is an epic poem, I am unsure how to go about reading it.

Do you recommend reading it like prose? Or should I constantly be trying to study certain passages and try and remember them as best I can.

I am thinking I will read it for the first time like prose, but then will go back and start again, and read it like I would poetry.

Do you think this is a good idea? What approaches did/do you take when tackling epic poems?

Sorry if this sounds nonsensical.

So Agamemnon is a dick and all for taking that priest's daughter, but aren't Achilles and the others guilty as well?

I'd assume all of their concubines are spoils of war, yes?

Hey guys,

I'm looking at a job at a used bookstore and on the application they asked:

Who wrote the following books?
>The Illiad
>Jane Eyre
>The Sun Also Rises

I know the names of the authors, but admittedly haven't read any of them. What kind of literary knowledge is one supposed to have entering a job like this? Does anyone else have any experience?
