well basically his main deal is he wants to secure the existence of freedom in the wake of kantian philosophy.

first he starts off by clarifying his views on spinoza - he doesn't have a problem with pantheism per se, if it's understood as things existing internally in god, but his problem with spinoza is just that, the way he reduces everything to just things. he thinks their is an exuberance and power in life that reason just can never capture

once you can accept beings exist in god without that castrating their autonomy, he dives into the meat of the essay. what he wants to understand is the relation of evil and the possibility of evil within this schema. without getting into the details, I'm gonna summarize it like this: the groundlessness of subjective freedom is the groundlessness of god's existence. evil co-emerges with autonomy of the human subject. freedom isn't the possibility of good or evil, but good AND evil. evil is the dark principle - basically, there is something in god that is not god, there is an otherness within god that is the source of evil in human subjects (and human subjects alone, god is just that being that has absolutely subordinated this dark principle to itself for all eternity), and that thing is the ground of god's existence that remains forever opaque to his understanding. he is self-caused, but self-caused out of what? boom. there you have it.

so yes, evil has its origin in god, evil is real, you can't handwave it away with privatio boni cuck arguments, knowledge is not a correlate of the good, there is such a thing as intelligent evil, calculating malignance, but has its origin in the very thing that god that isn't god himself - the inexplicability of his existence in the first place
