Will this ruin my impression of Mishima? I heard that you're supposed to start with The Sailor, but the synopsis of this sounds so much more interesting to me. Although I've been warned its intense.

where to start with Mishima? I started pic related but stopped halway, couldnt keep reading and bored me to death.

So there are many aspects of beauty described in this book, but I don't really understand all of them.
What he seems to be describing first, is how the idea of beauty of Golden Pavilion plainted in his mind by his father was ever growing, and ended up making him dissapointed at the real thing.
Then when the war starts and bombing raids become a possibility, he sees beauty in the transcience of the Pavilion, seeing how it can die in the same fire as him, meaning he exists in the very same world as this beauty after all.
But when the war ends and the Kinkakuji is untouched, he starts thinking the Pavilion is even more beautiful, despite it seemingly going back to square 1. Why? What was the point of that pondering on it's transcience in the first place?
Also please help me understand the point of his two friends Tsurukawa (seems like he's seeing the good in Mizoguchi, but then later is revealed to kill himself? what's the point?) and Kashiwagi (seems like a negative influence, and his perception of beauty seems rather more based on the contrast with ugliness, but what's the point of the character?)

Should I read this or should I start somewhere else from Mishima ?

It's great, but I don't feel like I have an adequate understanding of it yet
