Do people ever stop telling stories and let Eben get on with his journey? Don't get me wrong the stories are great but Eben is hilarious. I like his parts the best.

A hidden gem if you want depressing nihilism and period dialogue.

I'm around page 520 of the Anchor Books edition. I'm going to try to finish it tonight. Can't wait to find out Burlingame's end game!

Gonna get drunk while reading more of this quite hilariously entertaining novel. Reminds a little of Don Quixote, Confederacy of Dunces, and I imagine it has a lot in common with Tristam Shandy. I wouldn't mind getting recs for more whimsical novels that follow a hapless protagonist.

"Heal hath no fouler, filthier Demon:
Preserve me, LORD, from English Seamen!"
Ebenezer Cooke, Gentlemen, Poet and Laureate of Maryland
