Honestly, if you haven't read The Lord of the Rings, you might give it a try. Wolfe is a superior prose stylist to Tolkien, but they have some similar vibes and approaches to things.

This is likely on purpose, because Wolfe loves the fuck out of Tolkien. Check this out:

Between Tolkien and Wolfe, and a few others, there's an argument to be made that the best genre fiction writers are all reactionaries.

We need more Gene Wolfe threads, they raise the quality of the board. Actually /sffg/ should probably be deleted, sci-fi and fantasy can sink or swim on this board on their own merits.

You need to taste the fur of the Wolfe.

I keep expecting him to die but he just keeps trucking along, it's pretty impressive.

Maybe some day he'll respond to a letter I wrote him about two years ago.

/lit/ has been my gateway to genuinely excellent literature and philosophy. I would never have known about Gene Wolfe or Borges if it weren't for /lit/, and I probably would not have gotten off my ass and read other writers (like Joyce or Faulkner) if it weren't for this board constantly hyping them up.

Also, I am able to keep abreast of certain threads in contemporary philosophy on this board, which I feel like I couldn't on Reddit or some other place. I wouldn't know what accelerationism was at all if it weren't for /lit/.

This board is great.

Hell, I think Wolfe has put out more books in the last ten years than Martin has. Hasn't he written, like, two novels in the last decade?

What are some recent works of literature whose underlying themes are deeply Catholic?

Obviously in the middle of the 20th Century we had writers like Evelyn Waugh and Graham Greene, and for something totally different we had Tolkien. Has anything like their work been written in the last few decades, though? I mean I guess the Wolfester counts, but anyone else?

Too good to be stuffed into /sffg/. What are your favorite works of his? I really love Fifth Head of Cerberus. The first story is actually really comfy.
