This book was given to me by a mentor along with his high praise. We've spoken for hours about literature and he has said numerous times that Independent People is one of the best books he has ever read.
I am about 200 pages in. It is good but often times I have no idea where it is going. I cant put my finger on what about it makes it intriguing. Great language and writing but there is no real plot, just seems like a simple story about a farmer.
Is its simplicity suppose to be profound?
Curious what the elites on /lit/ thought.

Just finished Independent People. I'm wondering, to what extent did Bjartur sexually abuse Asta Solilja? The scene where that happens is vague, almost dream-like from AS's POV. I don't suppose it matters, I'm just curious what your interpretation of it was.

Also, are you meant to think that it's wonderful that she was taken back by him and that she gets to die in his arms, despite the fact that he exploited her and then threw her out? The tone reads like a moment of beauty borne out of poverty, but the reality of the situation felt lonelier than it was being presented as.
