Are you talking about "the Jest"? Because that's also a very nice cover.

I've heard a lot about it, and it seems like something I might like. Is it just a /lit/ circlejerk or something worth my time?

Wanna pick this up. I've been listening to his interviews and he seems like a good dude. But is this book worth it?

I want to start reading more books, but I just keep re-reading Infinite Jest. How much of a problem is this?

I've enjoyed almost every part up until this info dump at the ~270 mark. Do I need to remember all these characters? (the Ennet House residents)

otherwise I still think that Hal is my favourite character so far. The conversation chapter with him and Orin is really good.

also which cover should I get more my hardback? I'm reading an old used copy of pic related

Let me tell you what this book is.

It's tediously bloated, and any remotely worthwhile parts are plagiarized from Dostoevsky, or buckled down by its own self indulgence.

It's for spineless pseuds who can't make their own decisions about life.

It's trash, and so is anyone who praises it.

I started reading this today and I binged the first 150 pages all in a day.

I FINALLY FUCKING GET IT. 5 years spent on /lit/ and I finally understand every single one of you going crazy about this book.

Infinite Jest is the greatest literary work since the beginning of humanity.

I hate to start another fucking Infinite Jest thread, but I guess the sheer number of them is in turn the reason for one more. It seems like a huge chunk of this board read the book in their late teens and early twenties, ie the formative years of their life, and that it left a huge impression. As someone who didn't read it, still hasn't read it, I'm a little intrigued by the hold it seems to have over people here.

If you've read Infinite Jest, when did you read it? How did it affect you at the time?

This book is not very good. It is entirely too long, and the digressions it lapses into for dozens of pages are neither interesting nor engaging. The problem of "the Entertainment" thoroughly lacks any compelling feature. The characters are bland.

In short, it's boring, and unlike other books that might be boring, Wallace's prose isn't engaging enough to generate interest.

Wallace was a pretty good writer, but this book is a dud. His real genius comes out in his nonfiction, and to a lesser degree, his short stories. We all need to admit this to ourselves and we'll be better off.

It's a part of growing up, or should be. It's like realizing Hemingway is actually a shit novelist, and his real brilliance is in his short stories. Sooner or later it's a fact every reader must face.
