>I have frequently wondered if the majority of mankind ever pause to reflect upon the occasionally titanic significance of dreams, and of the obscure world to which they belong. Whilst the greater number of our nocturnal visions are perhaps no more than faint and fantastic reflections of our waking experiences—Freud to the contrary with his puerile symbolism—there are still a certain remainder whose immundane and ethereal character permits of no ordinary interpretation, and whose vaguely exciting and disquieting effect suggests possible minute glimpses into a sphere of mental existence no less important than physical life, yet separated from that life by an all but impassable barrier. From my experience I cannot doubt but that man, when lost to terrestrial consciousness, is indeed sojourning in another and uncorporeal life of far different nature from the life we know; and of which only the slightest and most indistinct memories linger after waking. From those blurred and fragmentary memories we may infer much, yet prove little. We may guess that in dreams life, matter, and vitality, as the earth knows such things, are not necessarily constant; and that time and space do not exist as our waking selves comprehend them. Sometimes I believe that this less material life is our truer life, and that our vain presence on the terraqueous globe is itself the secondary or merely virtual phenomenon.

I know this man is memed a lot on this website, but he was quite ahead of his time in my view.

"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."

I've correlated all of my mind's contents. Humans weren't meant to exist amongst one another. We were all meant to die together. We can't keep manipulating information forever. Eventually, this must end.

Each story has an arc, a formula, and a pattern. Once you realize this pattern, you can see it everywhere. Lovecraft captured the unknown beautifully. For a time, humans feared the unknown. Most still fear institutions and the great empty space. One day, we will leave all of this foolishness behind. We will stop clapping when a rocket takes off and lands. We will stop lauding scientists for curing diseases. We will posses all of the abilities to render a safe world, all encompassed in our minds. We won't need war or famine. Such realities are hard to comprehend. There are aliens among us. They pretend they don't know, but they do. There are brilliant people alive right now living normal lives. I hope we can look back one day and realize who was who. What small changes did you make that impacted the world in ways you could never understand? Did it even matter in the end? A final epoch will come. Believe me. We will end it all together.

I don't mean to focus on Lovecraft. It's just a pop sci-fi writer. It's some of his writings that impress upon me perspectives that I never thought existed. And for that, I must thank him.

How is cosmic horror a valid genre? It's just psychological horror except unintentionally funny.

H P Lovecraft is overrated and excruciatingly boring to read. Why has he been lauded so much? Could someone please recommend me a non-pretentious and actually good horror author?
