i'm in charge of a small group of kids who are going into the sixth grade at a tutoring clinic. i've decided to have them read a book together so we can have some interesting discussions and they can eventually write something about it (analysis).

i've looked up a bunch of middle school recommended books online and realized i haven't actually read a whole lot of them myself so i can't speak to the quality or whether if it would be too easy for them, etc.

i'm thinking of doing Holes by Louis Sachar first. what did /lit/ read when they were this age (11-13)?

pic related. it was the book i would have definitely turned to first but they've all read it already. i told them to write down their favorite books and all that and got back a bunch of fantasy series so i'd like to get away from that and attempt to broaden their tastes.

Just found out pic related is being made into a movie. Why now? It's been like two decades since the book was written.

>A young boy is forced to visit an old man who lives in seclusion
>The old man is known as "The Giver" he instructs the young boy, dubbed "The Receiver" to remove some of his clothing and lay down so he can receive experiences from the old man
>Sometimes the boy is happy after this, other times he is confused, and occasionally the boy is even hurt by The Giver.

I MISSED MY CHANCE TO BECOME THE FUNNIEST 8TH GRADER IN THE WORLD, SHIT!

What's the grown up version of this book? I enjoyed it a lot as a kid and have reread it twice since then, years apart.

Giver discussion guys?

Just finished and I really liked it. The loving relationship between the Giver and Jonas however, felt too rushed to me. Can't really cite any particular passages or any structural faults in the novel to support this, but I guess it's due to the fact that I read the book in a few sittings.

I felt the book put those individuals on blast who tend to turn away from the suffering of the world because it makes them "too sad" to think about all that stuff and, as a consequence, end up not giving it the attention it deserves. So in the end they turn a blind eye to whatever suffering they come across because it depresses them. My girlfriend's sister is somewhat like this. She doesn't like to read sad books, and stays away from "depressing" media. I mean, it pissed me the fuck off how the inhabitants of whatever place it was called were too immature to shoulder the joys and - by implication - pain of life.

Anyone mind helping me to flesh this out or want to air their own opinion about the book?

PS: Check Wiki, and see if you can lol

I think I was around 12 or so when I read it... one of the most mind-blowing experiences of my life. It was pretty much the first time I discovered that society was a dynamic construct, and even 10 years after reading it I still think about it now and again.

I don't think I can recommend it to anyone on here unless you happen to be lurking/new to /lit/ and haven't read entry level dystopian fiction like 1984 or BNW or something like that.

So I just picked this up after getting it recommended to me by /lit/ and a friend, and I was suprised to see it was a childrens book, i've heard it's very deep and philosophical, could a childrens book really convey these things?

Hey /lit/ my little brother has to read this for his summer reading. I smiled and remembered when I had to read it in grade school, but talking to him about it made me wonder something. Looking back on the book a bit older there are quite a few points I missed, and I mostly enjoyed it just as a good story as a child. This book is intended for children though right? Was I a dumb kid or is this book probably better for teens?

hey /lit/ just finished my copy of lois lowry's 'the giver' it took me awhile to finish because I was annotating certain sections, but honestly I loved it. My question is this to other readers of avant garde literature, when will lowry be allowed into the modern canon of writers? this book highlights so many previous unexplored ideals and concepts with delicate subtlety, best book to come out of the 90s. I'm disappointed when I dont see it placed up much upon this board, and suggest everyone has a read, or better ye re-read :)
