Well, I finished it. I have, for the record, officially been filtered. How can I recover from this? Shall I flip back to pg.1 and start over?

Uh... Slothrop just fucked an 11 year old girl. This is very problematic. Is this why Pynchon hides away? pedophile shame?

It filtered me back in college. I was in over my head. I didn't know what I was getting into. Have you ever been filtered? Did you really read Plato's complete works, or just a few dialogues? Did you really read Don Quixote in it's entirety? Ulysses? Did you return later and enjoy it and realize how fucking stupid you used to be?

Apparently, one of the rumors buzzing around the Huntington Library regarding Pynchon's archive is that the scene where Slothrop puts on the Hawaiian shirt (the one gifted to him by his brother Hogan) was supposed to begin with Slothrop discovering a stain down the front of his undershirt, perhaps some sauerkraut, which would require him to go top button like some kind of louse in order to hide it. This would transition the narrative into the story of Karl Unger the Undershirt; it seems a cabal of evil mercantiles invented the crew neck as a way to prevent people from turning their undershirts back to front after meatball mishaps, a ploy to get people to buy new undershirts to replace the ones they ruined eating a pomegranate.

There is an entire series of sentient consumer goods which were cut from a late draft of Gravity's Rainbow. Each of these episodes (Pynchon refers to these sections collectively as 'The Malls' in his notes) would be told from the perspective of a sentient consumer good and would be about an evil cabal behind some evil plan who themselves are a part of an even more evil cabal behind some evil plan and so on and so fourth ad infinitum as some clever literary trick and meta allusion towards the conspiracy. Each of these items would begin in the story as being some item Slothrop encounters along the way and end up with one Pfc. Eddie Pensiero.

Right, so there is that. The general thrust of this whole sentient consumer goods sidebar was that Pfc. Eddie Pensiero was some sort of conspiracy savant or something with allusions towards Eddie being the source of it all. Nearly 500 pages were cut from that late draft and boiled down to Byron the Bulb and an improbable harmonica.

It's actually postmodernism as that is what gave rise to "Gravity's Rainbow," the greatest artistic achievement ever. Seriously...Homer, Shakespeare, Mozart, Beethoven, Michelangelo: they created some of the greatest art known to man. Unfortunately, it all pales in comparison to the great book.

History, as they say, has been Pynched.

I want to read this book but it’s been years since I read a book cover-to-cover. I feel like I should work up to it. I know if I try reading it now, I’ll just give up. What should I read to get ready?
