I think the gnostic "prison planet" idea is true but only to an extent. There was once a war between gods, a clash of the titans if you will, and one god was victorious. To prevent man from rising up against him, he sent his archons down from Olympus or whatever to deactiate the elemental seals. This caused the flow of mana to wither away and this tyrant god replaced mana with his own brand of false energy. This energy is what causes war, famine, disease, etc because it is incompatible. We NEED the original mana back and the only way is for a group of teenagers to open the elemental seals with the power of friendship and use the elemental master's powers to revive the world tree and destroy the tyrant god and his archons.

Dragons used to exist until the flow of mana was cut off. They relied on it for survival. It's possible one or two are still alive, deep in the earth under mountains where pools of ancient mana collect in delicious crystals that are slowly dissolving. This is possibly what is under Antarctica where the world elites visit. They are in communication with a dragon that gives them commands, hence the ruling elites being represented by the biblical snake. Neither the tyrant god nor the dragon people are "good" in the typical sense and most men would be better off forging their own path. More often we are caught in the middle of this battle.

Already read that one and it was amazing, after you go through Jack Vance and Gene Wolfe everything else is kind of disappointing, but even so I really want to read another book like Dying Earth.
