I struggle to focus on just one book, help me pick which I should finish on the basis of what I can GAIN from reading it.

>The Crown Jewels by Walter Williams
Just a cheesy and poory written scifi novel from the 80s. Got it just to dip my toes back into reading fiction and it was free.

>House of Leaves
Fell for the meme, but now I bought it. Very dense reading a convoluted, but I do feel a sense of eeriness from it. Not sure what I can gain from it....

>Washington, A Life
George Washington's biography. A riveting story, I feel I share some similarities with Washington. Got it as a tip for managing neuroticism: read biographies so you recognize the fault of your heroes. I probably need to read this first anyway since I checked it out from the library.

>Rules for Radicals by Alinsky
Haven't started it yet, just want to read it so I know what leftist scum are plotting.

>Maps of Meaning
Only dipped my toes in it, my only worry is if it's just a rehash of Peterson's lectures, which I watched all with close attention.

>Corpus Hermetica
Haven't started at all, but curious about esoteric wisdom.

>Holistic Tarot
I've got a Tarot card deck and wish to git gud at divination so that I can impress people, but I also take them partially seriously.

>Mere Christianity
Thought it would be a good read. But then again I've already watched a lot of Peterson.

>The Weight of this World by David Joy
A fiction book with good prose about Southerners. It's about immigrants.

>Neurosis and Human Growth
An analysis of neurosis, very important but an uber dense read. I'm slogging through it.

I literally understood hegel on the first read but maybe that's because I'm a Catholic desu.

I picked up The Hobbit all the way back in July, read about 40 pages of it and put it down. I got bored yesterday and picked up where I left off.

I just finished it several minutes ago.

Why did I ever put it down in the first place, its a great book. My favourite part was the battle with the spiders. I've literally never read a book more comfy in my life.

Thoughts on the Hobbit/LOTR in general?

You can't have a romance with your novel.

Or can you

Hegel keeps using words like 'form' and 'substance' and 'Notion' but I don't know what he means by this.
It seems like the way germanics express philosophical ideas is to just enshrine them in these philosophically immense compound buzzphrases rather than do the whole aristotelean thing I'm used to.
Can somebody explain the meaning of these in terms of scholasticism or something?

Are Modern translations a joke?

Every "modern" or contemporary translation of a classic I own is completely terrible. My translation of Notes is utter shit rendering the book unreadable even though I got it last August, and my copies of Confessions and the death of ivan ilyich are crap as well, written by a contemporary writer (Although not as bad as the former, both books were relatively enjoyable)

Should I just stick to Garnet or McDuff for Russian /lit/?

I've been doing that as well and it's great, it's just it doesn't help me understand the scope of logic, like where linguistics, phil. langauge, or phil. math come in.

Is Hegel actually worth reading? Can we please settle this one? Is he a charlatan or a genius, and why?

"I saw the Emperor – this world-spirit – riding out of the city on reconnaissance. It is indeed a wonderful sensation to see such an individual, who, concentrated here at a single point, astride a horse, reaches out over the world and masters it ... this extraordinary man, whom it is impossible not to admire"

Hegel wrote this about Napoleon after he watched him enter Jena follwing his victory over Prussia.

So /lit/, which individual embodies the zeitgeist of today? Trump? Farage? Kim Kardashian? Kanye West? Someone else?
