Try looking for deeper themes rather than just taking everything at face value. Keep in mind that Mishima prioritizes aesthetics over all else in many of his works. Pick whichever translation you'd like.
read "The Sound of Waves", "The Sailor Who Fell From Grace with the Sea" and "The Temple of the Golden Pavilion" in that order.

The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea is for my money the best entry into Mishima's writings.
I think following this chart is the best way to work through his library.

This chart has served me well. I just finished Confessions of a Mask and not sure how it would work as one's first Mishima book. That being said, it was the first book the english-speaking world got from him and he was able to get popular here from it. I definitely think The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea is the best entry point, but it's probably not a big deal.
