I feel I also need to talk about Wuthering Heights after talking about Jane Eyre. Also beautifully written, and being from Yorkshire myself, Emily Bronte's observation for her landscapes is spot-on. Her observation of her characters is so thoroughly understood too, from the passive-aggressive power-play of Cathy to the inter-generational misanthropy Heathcliffe has towards the descendants of those who treated him wrong. Wuthering Heights is terrifying, intense and thoroughly unpleasant - the book honestly made my toes curl at multiple times as it made me feel that uncomfortable while reading it. Knowing that Emily wrote her only novel when she was 19 as a response to her sisters - Emily's attitude was that writing a novel would be easy - just blows me away.

I've enjoyed multiple books written by women, I don't know why /lit/ has this anti-women writers thing going on, especially when great books like Wuthering Heights exist.

(OP here)
I initially picked this book up thinking it would be an atmospheric and slow-burning romance tale that would bore the fuck out of me but it was cheap and most people I know who enjoyed reading said it was one of their personal favourites.

I get why now. It's so immensely moody and intense, drenched in oppressive atmosphere that really feels authentic (coming from a Yorkshire boy who had trips to the Yorkshire moors for "fun").

The amount of psychological manipulation at play in this novel is amazing. My impression of it being a romantic novel went out of the window when the tensions between Earnshaw and Heathcliffe intensified, when Heathcliffe's hatred for the Lintons grows to not just encompass Isabelle (who he marries) and Edgar (her brother) but also their children. This book becomes pure misanthropy and it's genuinely uncomfortable.

Really not sure how Emily Bronte wrote this at 19 being as introverted as she was and why she never wrote another novel kind of annoys me (to my understanding she thought writing novels was silly - this book is basically a "fuck off get off my back bitches" to her sisters). She clearly had some skills with observing the ulterior motives behind every action and the passive aggressive manipulation in every word because this book is a fucking masterful play with psychological turmoil.

What's /lit/'s opinion on this book? I don't see it talked about too much.

I just read it and it was really cool and stuff, desu I loved every single page of it even though I'm a boy and it was written by some girl.

People who claim women can't write have never read this or were too much of a Grug to understand it.

Wuthering Heights.

Loving it so far. About halfway through. Initially thought I was just going to read some sentimental romantic novel and wasn't expecting much, but pretty quickly things become ominous, malicious and uncomfortable. All of the passive-aggressive manipulation, the forcing of embarrassment onto others, the outright lies, it's absolutely uncomfortable. It's fascinating. I'm very surprised with how intense it becomes.

Wishing to read Jane Eyre next, I hear that is also very good.

Wuthering Heights thread.

Who has read it? What did you think?

My initial thought was that it was going to be a typically saccharin sentimental mess but what I actually got was a darkly brooding story where everyone's words are like daggers. Is there a bigger cunt in literature than Catherine?

Why isn't this book talked about much here?

I need a book with an alpha character who cucks the shit out of people. Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights was the most alpha character in literary history. Just read Mayor of Casterbridge which was a big disappointment, and now I'm in need of a good cucking story.

I had to drag myself to finish this novel for an assignment. What the fuck are women's problems with themselves? How is Heathcliff an ideal guy?

I was raging most of the time I was reading this book. Catherine was Heathcliff's equal - THIS is true love? What the fuck, man. Did I miss something? This is a well-written novel with absolutely shit characters. Am I supposed to like this?
