What are the funniest books? I bought Norm MacDonald's book and I like it so far. I want to learn how to write comedy because I don't see any of my friends anymore and want to make people laugh again.

>just figured out that Slothrop is a reference to John Lothropp
>Rev. John Lothropp (1584–1653) — sometimes spelled Lothrop or Lathrop — was an English Anglican clergyman, who became a Congregationalist minister and emigrant to New England. He was among the first settlers of Barnstable, Massachusetts. Perhaps Lothropp's principal claim to fame is that he was a strong proponent of the idea of the Separation of Church and State (also called "Freedom of Religion"). This idea was considered heretical in England during his time, but eventually became the mainstream view of people in the United States of America, because of the efforts of John Lothropp and others. Lothropp left an indelible mark on the culture of New England, and through that, upon the rest of the country. He has had many notable descendants, including at least six US presidents, as well as many other prominent Governors, government leaders, leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and business people.

>Plus he is constantly trying to present scat and pedophilia as normal, human condition stuff. It makes me cringe.
How did you miss Pynchon's condemnation of these things? He pretty explicitly ties them to modernistic ideas of progress, and is very against things that only relate to death. Esther's nose job, V2 rockets, eating shit, becoming a robot, are all things he seems to not like.

The modernist movement and it's scientification of all American culture has been a disaster for me. After seeing countless posts all across the internet about how great science is -- usually made by ugly faced potato-sack-body bug people -- my appreciation for the field has diminished greatly. I actually study ecology so it's not like I hate the core concept. The culture that stems from science is sickening. Like I'm supposed to give a shit that some faggots in Europe made a big metal loop and now want an even bigger loop. Like I'm supposed to care about any new advance in technological development. People got on fine hundreds of years ago, who gives a shit if they cure cancer? Increasingly, it becomes impossible to exist between Luddite and all in. I can't even complete my degree (where all the classes traditionally take place outdoors!) without using the internet for hours, glued to my desk pretending like I'm watching a lecture. It's not even possible to exist without a phone because it's required to log into university systems.

And the whole practice feels like it's just making people duller, and the most interesting example of this is the field of psychology. The following relates to Harlow's monkey experiments and their necessity to changing the prevailing "scientific" opinion

>It was the debate concerning the reasons behind the demonstrated need for maternal care that Harlow addressed in his studies with surrogates. Physical contact with infants was considered harmful to their development, and this view led to sterile, contact-less nurseries across the country. Bowlby disagreed, claiming that the mother provides much more than food to the infant, including a unique bond that positively influences the child's development and mental health.

>The importance of these findings is that they contradicted both the traditional pedagogic advice of limiting or avoiding bodily contact in an attempt to avoid spoiling children, and the insistence of the predominant behaviorist school of psychology that emotions were negligible. Feeding was thought to be the most important factor in the formation of a mother–child bond. Harlow concluded, however, that nursing strengthened the mother–child bond because of the intimate body contact that it provided. He described his experiments as a study of love. He also believed that contact comfort could be provided by either mother or father. Though widely accepted now, this idea was revolutionary at the time in provoking thoughts and values concerning the studies of love.

Now how on Earth did anyone ever fall for that egg head shit? When did somebody think that contact deprivation would be good for a social animal that spends the first few years of life unable to walk and getting food from it's mother's breast?
