I started reading Cradle because a random list on the internet said "if you like Codex Alera read Cradle". And also because I thought it was written by the guy who made Sim City and thought it would be interesting to read a fantasy series by him.

It's kinda a progression fantasy series. The main character goes from literally the single weakest guy in the empire to leading armies and battling his interstellar zerg queen daughter inside a raging tornado on top of like a volcano about to explode.
