If Burgers are 90% NPCs, then Japanese are 99% NPCs. If it sounds like I'm memeing I'm really not. Because of the profound influence America has had on Japan Post WWII, a lot of the shallowness of consumer culture prevalent in modern America is also in modern Japanese culture. But whereas American culture at its fundamental base at least values individuality, Japan is highly collectivist. So consumer culture + collectivist culture = A population of mostly NPCs. If you read about Yukio Mishima and his political views, this is the exact reason why he rejected a modernizing/Amaricanizing Japan.

OP, if you want to understand Modern Japan. Any sort of history from before the Meiji Period (From 1868) is negligible (Trust me, I've studied it and its honestly a waste of time except for the novelty). Even if you just focus your studies on Japan from 1945 after, you will still have a highly accurate understanding of contemporary Japan.
