Good writer or a hack?
I've read and enjoyed both on the road and dharma bums, but I can understand the criticism.

Are there any modern writers who are influenced by non-literary or unconventional art and ideas? I'm getting bored of the uninspired traditional academic Western canon/postmodernism worship that is all too common. Eventually creating new literature out of reused ideas from old literature feels incestuous.

Like how pic related was influenced by jazz and William Carlos Williams by painting etc

Post books you're considering reading, and then wait for someone to comment on the quality of said books from their own personal experience.

I'm a pretty new "serious" reader, but the books I'm looking into picking up are:
>Min Kamp 1-4 by Knausgaard
>Blood Meridian by McCarthy (re-read)
>Steppenwolf by Hesse
>On the Road by pic related
>Breakfast of Champions by Vonnegut

Pretty basic reads overall, what are you looking into /lit/?

why is cool to hate on Kerouac in /lit/?

>muh shitty prose

Plenty of people, including myself, loved it. He was going for a specific style (trying to emulate jazz music) and it worked

>muh entry level lit for teenagers

So what? The Stranger is entry level phil, doesn't mean isn't a good book

>muh idealized bum/leech lifestyle

You like, completely missed the obvious overtones of self-awareness that they all had about their situation. And Kerouac/ wasn't simply bumming off everyone the whole time. And even if he was, so fucking what? why do I see this pathetic "reason" to hate him here all the time?

>fucked bitches left and right
>literally cucked Neil Cassady
>handsome and physically fit
>always drinking
Can we all agree that Jack Kerouac is the most Chad author?

The Beats generally are good writers undermined today by legions of spoiled young fans who reduce their writing and how they live to "I'm superior and enlightened for my rich kid tourism"

Is the audience supposed to admire the characters in 'On the Road', or just understand them? Most of the characters are scoundrels, but Sal never really gives an opinion on the morality of their behavior, just on how interesting they are.

If Jack Kerouac was born in this generation what music would he be influenced by?

He was also a manlet.
