What up /lit/ I'm trying to get into reading as I've never really read any book, and I'm looking for recommandation for someone to ease me into it.
By the way I'm not a native english speaker.

I've been playing a bit of chess (against the computer) lately and I've realized something. Initially I was playing completely absent mindedly; I would make moves with my hand, but with my mind I was thinking about all sorts of irrelevant stuff (a movie I've seen, some article I read, having imaginary conversations, etc.).
When I realized this I made a conscious effort to actually start thinking about the game at hand (if I put this piece here do I leave it hanging, or is it protected -the opponent just moved a piece, is he attacking anything, what's he trying to do, and so on). Naturally I instantly started playing a lot better.
I then realized that I'm absent minded throughout most of the day, and throughout most activities -not just this particular experience of playing chess. I never really think about what I'm doing, but instead I'm just acting on auto-pilot and thinking about something else entirely.
With chess the impact on my performance was very clear. I figure that my absent mindedness probably has a negative impact on other activities I do as well, I've just never noticed it, so I probably should do something about it.

Are there any books that can make me less retarded and teach me how to think properly?

the final parts of Citadel completely baffled me, does anyone else relate? I vaguely understood what they were describing in 'the key to the universe' chapter but once Severian brought up the fact that he wasn't the first Severian that's when the book straight up lost me

I guess what I liked about it most was Thecla/Severian relationship, like how severian would nonstop rave about thecla in the beginning of the book but at the end of the series he straight up calls her a 'cruel and foolish woman'. and how his opinion on vodalus did a complete 180 at the end of the book too

I might check our Urth later but I heard it's pretty shit, or at the very least has some mixed opinions
