Similarly read through BotNS recently as a first pass, and have now started the reread with Alzabo Soup companion. I noticed the Alzabo Soup hosts are overly critical of his unreliability and they think his "perfect memory" means he doesn't make mistakes and he should always be perfectly aware of his past, with instant recall.

That said, Severian does play down and obfuscate multitudes of hideous things throughout the books - and the smoke and mirrors act is done at times consciously, and other times subconsciously so identifying such moments can be a bit tricky.
