Augustine was the first "Protestant". Cyprian and Justin Martyr upheld the Tradition that Jesus Christ appeared to Abraham in Genesis 18 and destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19. Augustine said those Early Christians were wrong, broke with that tradition, and started a new denomination glorifying "an angel" when Genesis 18 clearly says The LORD.
