And to clarify here, there are some magazines with specific aesthetic/content focuses. But more often, any given magazine just wants the "best" material they can find regardless of style, and prejudices vary by year depending on who's reading submissions and editing. That's part of why it's a numbers game, and you have to submit widely and simultaneously.
