Do you think students should be assigned and forced to read books in school and studied (Like Gatby, Rye etc) or should students just have free choice to read any book they want?

I just finished reading this, and all I can say is; wow.

This is the first novel I've read for pleasure in years. A combination of lackluster required HS readings and a generally edgy teenager phase pushed me away from literature. Luckily, my friends convinced me to start reading again, and I just blazed through the last 100 pages of this masterpiece. The closing lines are brilliantly poignant, I just stared at them for several minutes with chills running down my spine.

I guess there really isn't a point to this thread, other than expressing my joy for rediscovering literature. This feels like a turning point for me in terms of hobbies (I'm really into music, and decently into film). If anyone wants to suggest further reading, please do so

Hey there /lit/

I want to read the great gatsby. I'm not a native speaker but I prefer buying books in their original language whenever i can, so i just want to ask you guys if it's considered hard to read. For comparison reading lovecraft in english is a little hard but manageable for me.

Thanks.

I have an essay to write in the MLA format regarding The Great Gatsby. Essentially a classic book report. Hit me up if you want to write it. I WILL PAY.

I need some help /lit/. In the Great Gatsby, who has hope that Tom Buchanan can make his life better? It's in the first three chapters, if that helps.

Eurofag here.
Sorry for another Great Gatsby thread.
Do you have to be an American to fully appreciate this book? Apart from the prose I honestly can't see any reason why this book is considered 'classsic' for you.

And I really hope I wasn't supposed to feel ANY sympathy for Gatsby.

I was wondering if anyone could give me tips on writing essays. I'm not very good at, expanding. I'm the type of person who just writes what they think so when I have papers that need to be 3 pages long, I run into problems.
Whenever I try to expand I just rewrite the last sentence and it looks like shit.

This was a good book, but didn't come close to deserving the praise it gets.

Didn't know where else to go, but I need help /lit/. Being a dull and not-so-deep person, it seems I missed quite a lot of the themes and topics presented in The Great Gatsby, which I had to read for school (yeah bear with me). My teacher asked that we write a 5 paragraph essay reflecting a theme that is presented during the book. I chose the theme of the character's tendency to be dissatisfied with their lives and how they try to make it better for themselves, despite the toll it takes on others. I honestly don't know where to start, so would anyone be willing to give some advice?

Every book club I have ever tried to start dies after a couple of months. The reason; people always choose shitty books that no one wants to read and it gets dull.

But I miss the regular discussion and review, so I am trying something different this time. Its a 'review club' basically, there is no obligation to read a particular book. Every time that you see a play, read a book, see a film, or go to a restaraunt, you write a review, and then based on that review people can decide wether or not they want to see it.

If you want to join the club then add me on skype. My skype name is 'rabbit.correspondence' we already have 15 members and it is growing steadily.

Jay-Z is writing the soundtrack to The Great Gatsby.

Why is this a thing /lit/?
It makes me sick.
