I'm not taking taste advice from a person rating Zeal of Mind and Flesh as a good book, it's was utter shite.
TWI utterly mogs 95% of this chart and if you don't get why you wouldn't recognize good writting even if it kicked you right in the ass. TWI is a good story right from the start, but becomes great as it goes on. Volume 4 is when it starts ascending and leaves others in the dust.
One TWI chapter written casually in the span of two days eats and spits out overwhelming majority of online writers, there is next to none competition. Pirateaba is a freak of nature.

>dangerous people changing their ways after exchanging a few sentences with her.
Any instances of that? Because I read the story twice and it strikes me as very disingenious portrayal of her character. Erin doesn't 'talk no jutsu', even if she does pull people on her side. Erin does that through pathological selflessness and compassion. And she does that aggresively. Hell, many of her friends were people that tried to kill her at one point or another.

I don't disagree that Erin has been Mary Suish at some points, but by saying she's just beeing 'sweet to fantasy minorities' you show the entire point of the story went over your head.

>That feels like an awkward way to retcon things when you could just have it be character development.

>Jesus. Glad I didn't bother reading this garbage.

I don't mean to say that her character is retconned, that very much is not the case, and there is a lot of character development from Erin. Actually, I think there were some 'pretending' from Erin even before, but only in Volumes 4/5 the author leaned into those things more heavily, making Erin a better character. Honestly, it could also be the case that Erin was supposed to be obviously pretending at times, but the author didn't convey it clearly enough, just making the character hateable.

However, on my re-read I found myself liking Erin a lot, but that's mostly because her character makes way more sense in a framework established in future volumes. But that's just one of the TWI's traits, the story gets better as it goes, all the time, so looking back it's harder to see it as it were. The story is still utterly dwarving the competition and stands proudly as one of the best webnovels ever written.

>Can anyone who's read TWI tell me if the slice of life stuff is consistent the whole way through the story? I'm on volume 3 and while I like the larger political plot and the metaphysical stuff with the dead gods returning the principal main plot of Erin and co's slice of life hijinks simply isn't compelling enough for me to want to wade through it to get to the interesting stuff. Unless the story completely reinvents itself from volume 4 onwards I think I'm gonna drop it and move on to mother of learning or smth.

The story absolutely reinvents itself later on, volume 4 is basically the end of the prologue. I personally didn't even like Erin before Volume 5. There is less slice of life, or rather the slice of life is different, more important to the story most of the time. The last volume 8 that has just been finished, caused a lot of whining in some people due to near lack of Slice-of-life elements, it had extreme focus on plot. If you already like TWI, then you will love the later volumes.
Trust me, Volume 3 is just the lower point in the series, starting from V4 the scope gets bigger and stakes larger, slowly changing TWI from Fantasy slice of life into Epic Fantasy. And it also gets massively better.
