So I might or might not have cancer.

Faced with the possible last days of my life, I am feeling a pressing need to write something of mine. So far I've been writing up short stories which have often found their way here, but now I want to start a novel.
So maybe I won't finish it. At least I can say I tried.

But that leads me to several questions
Do you organize your characters, events etc. in some way?
I just have a lot of loose paper lying around? Just elements with no place.
Do you write like this or start to end? If you do it like this, how do you keep track and how do you order these parts of the story?

Writing process general, I suppose
Tell me how you write.
