I'm about 30 pages into the Sound and the Fury and I have no fucking clue what I'm supposed to be taking from this. I guess the protagonist is retarded or something? Is this story supposed to go anywhere? it's all disjointed and shit. I picked up TSATF and As I Lay Dying because I really like McCarthy and I read that Faulkner was a big influence on McCarthy, but so far TSATF is undecipherable to me. Is it supposed to be coherent or make some kind of sense? Is it a puzzle game where I'm supposed to piece together what's going on from just information taken from a retard's perspective? I don't get it. I'll keep trying to truck through and finish it but I am really confused.

The sheer poetic power of this book humbles me. I feel I have fallen under a spell reading Quentin and Jason's parts. The sounds, the rhythms, the meter Faulkner translates into prose is so invigorating I can't contain my enthusiasm.

What are some books whose sheer beauty in prose and construction has blown you away, /lit/?

I'm not quite sure what to make of Jason, in the end. On the one hand, he got an incredibly shitty deal in life. On the other hand, I don't think I've ever encountered a more callous and pathetic and small-minded character in literature.

I suppose ultimately he got what he deserved.

What does lit think about this book? I'm a third of the way through it and I'm giving up. Too convoluted and not much happening. Was really looking forward to reading it because I enjoyed light in august and as I lay dying.

Should I keep at it? What else is good by Faulkner?
