Why does /lit/ hate this book so much? Every time it is mentioned there is always some anon bashing it. I thought it was a short and interesting read. I don't know what else Camus has written or if it's any good but I found this book to be nice. So why all the hate /lit/? Explain yourselves.

I could generally tolerate all manner of literature that my high school english classes threw at me and find something enjoyable about them except for the time I had to read The Stranger for my AP Literature class. It was just so unbelievably uninteresting and boring to me that it became the only time I had a hard time finishing a book. We had class-wide discussions about the book and about absurdism and I really just couldn't stand through any of it for some reason. I'm not sure why I hated it so much though. The discussion/indulgence of nihilism just really strikes me as pedestrian and disgusting for some reason.

Will do. Conrad is fantastic post-Victorian fiction. I'm honestly just gonna reccomend some other classics as well because I'm a basic bitch. Pic related is incredible

Any doomer-tier novels or novels regarding isolation?

I want books that feel cold like The Stranger.

I'm just gonna say it. Camus's The Stranger was not existentialism, but absurdism. If Camus didn't want to be called an absurdist, he shouldn't have written absurdism. Existentialism is about the odd fact reality "is" in the first place. Absurdism is about the oddness of that reality. The Stranger was about the latter. Good book though. Very good.

as i have started to read more and more books with philosophical meaning like for instance, the stranger by albert camus, i have noticed that I don't make many insights to the books as I would like to. How would one go about making more insight when it comes to reading books like that?

What do you guys think? Excited to hear opposing opinions.

Best written "philosophy" thread (because, no, you're not smart enough for Hegel)

I'll go with The Stranger. Great prose and Camus is unparalleled in his ability to explicate philosophical ideas in a compelling and natural storyline

I tried reading Karamazov in high school and dropped it after about 100 pages. I remember it being somewhat preachy and poorly paced after the first section. Should I try reading it again?

What the fuck was his problem?
What is the point of this book? I found the first 2 or 3 chapters incredibly slow and what was the point of the man and his dog?
