Literary Fiction was created as a marketing category for structurally weird or "heady" fiction that publishers didn't feel comfortable leaving in general fiction. It's a kitchen sink, containing everything from transgressive fiction to symbolist fiction to southern gothic to psychological realism and dozens of other minor genres. Genre Fiction, on the other hand, is just fiction that belongs to the select few genres that have a reliable market base (Romance, mystery/thriller/crime, horror, sci-fi/fantasy, sometimes historicals and a few other genres)
and that's it. Anything else is shitposting or posturing.
