What are some historical or literary moments, such as the Tank Man (pic related) or Antigone, where a single person defies all the machinery and power of the State in order to defend their dignity or their view of what was right?

Hey /lit/ I need some goddamn help

4 years ago, I read this short story that I absolutely cannot remember the name or author to. I've wanted to reread it because I remember it interested me back then but never got around to it and forgot about it.

So here's what I can remember from what little I retained.

>The story takes place in like 1960s-1970s China, most probably Beijing(?) as the location of the story. This middle-aged Chinese man, is falsely accused of (here's where I kinda forget) either of murder or having poisoned a man's soup (or cofee, or tea). Man is interrogated and beaten up by the cops. -----cant remember alot of the in between--- Towards end of the story, another person gets poisoned, in the their food/drink and the person poison was either a cop who interrogated or it was the accused Chinese man.
The actual date of publication is unknown to me, but if I recall correctly, the short story had some influence from the Beijing man who stood in front of a tank (1989) so the short story might have been written after 1989 but, again, I am not 100% sure.

I'm pretty sure that the author was native Chinese who moved to the US.

If anyone can help me in finding this story, that would be so awesome.
