>Love/war goddesses tend to be related to the regeneration of life as well (see Kali or Ishtar), but Athena doesn't seem to present that either.
What do you know about Kali?
>It strikes me as related to her role of patron and protector of the polis
More a Vishnu than a Shiva. Shiva is a god that has always spoke to me and I've wanted to find its analogue in the European tradition. Alexander believed it to be Dionysus but I think this is undervaluing the role of Shiva. Shiva to me represents what is truly great in the world: Creative destruction. This is the process of capitalism (and similar processes) in a deified form, and I think Ares (as well as Wotan to an extent) represents this well.
