Bukowski was a favourite of one of the greatest bloggers of all time.

>there are worse things than
>being Alone
>but it often takes decades
>to realize this
>and most often
>when you do
>it's too late
>and there's nothing worse
>than
>too late.
-- Charles Bukowski

>For these reasons, I am becoming convinced that the only real way to "personal growth" outside of direct action is through careful study of fiction. Of course stories may have an intended meaning, but a well written story allows you to ask not just "what does the story mean?" but "why do I think that this is what the story means?" As in The Second Story Of Echo And Narcissus: "The story is the pool... what do you see in it? It's a reflection and a projection..." (3)

a lot of people who think it's great have not read many other books or are recycling opinions from well read people have made about the book. the appeal of it i think is that it is a book about THINGS and IDEAS but its really not great. you'll find that a lot of people are drawn to these types of books because they seem important and its good to like important books (see a poser like Pete Buttigieg and Ulysses).

read a book like dog of the south, you can't go wrong with Portis.

too many people are online and the stakes are much higher than they were in 2009. meme magic is real which means it must be controlled which means some order needs to be imposed on all aspects of the internet. this is what those early internet pioneers always wanted, their platforms are now the loci of seemingly powerful forces, but the real centers of control remain obscured. if the internet actually mattered you wouldn't be allowed to use it.

Some anon pointed out the other day that TLP's website is going to disappear this year, so I went ahead and made an archive of it. You can download the whole thing (1.4 GB):

https://mega.nz/#!jThGCQ4C!cA9PkNXd139CHL1y4dyvNAtAE2ij6E26r-z14UBmj54

Everything's there, and the current landing page for most of the links in there are included as well, except for Russian Wikipedia which for some reason would have taken up upwards of 10 GB.

Enjoy.

>"But that book was written in 1908. Based on what I've seen on Downton Abbey, things were a lot different then."

>Well, yes, obviously, there had just been a massive leap forward in technology and industrialization, a booming economy fueling a wealth gap, temporarily course corrected by a financial panic "precipitated" by the failure of two overspeculating brokerage houses. There were also, simultaneously, great advances in progressive causes like worker's rights and food quality, all on the background of decreasing importance of religion among educated whites in favor of science. Not physics or chemistry, but evolution. Tabloids were incomprehensibly popular, partisan media the norm. A loosening of conventional morality manifested as bored promiscuity, female bisexuality, and a flood of new porn the likes of which never existed before.

>"That does sound different. And awesome. What did their Millennial kids inherit, what did they experience over their adult lives, say 1929-1945?"

>I totally don't know, Boardwalk Empire only goes up to 1924 and Mad Men starts 1960.

What did he mean by this?
