From my experience, Murakami's books have this trait where you invent a bunch of theories to explain what is happening and at the end Murakami doesn't explain anything or put in the plot twist ending we expect. This isn't because he wants to keep the ending open ended, but because one of his themes is that absurd things happen to people for no reason. It's a theme that borrows heavily from Kafka, a writer Murakami idolizes. So In my opinion, May Kashara wasn't Kumiko in Wind Up Bird, and Haida wasn't Yuzuki in Colorless Tsukuru, nor was Samsa turned into a beetle for any particular reason or K. put on trial for any reason. You can invent theories and some of them actually stick, but I think they detract and its a western idea from being too conditioned to Fight Club-esque plot twists. I could be wrong though, I haven't looked into it, just my opinion.

'He appealed directly to the intellect. To begin with, he maintained that their genitals were for copulating with stars in the Milky Way. Their pubic hair indigo roots buried deep beneath white skin and a few strands already strong and thickenning, would grow out in order to tickle coy stardust when the rape occurred.'
