Recommend books in which the main character finds himself involved in something deadly, bizarre and frightening that he doesn't want to be a part of. (image related)

One of my fav books of all time. Strange to admit but read it because it was one of the books quoted in Deus Ex. Although the setting and plot are completely different it has some of the same eerie atmosphere as the game.

Recommend any other books that meet these criteria:

* it's got an eerie/mysterious/creepy feel to it
* other than being entertaining, it touches on some serious life issues
* main character struggles to survive despite terrible adversities and finds ways to adapt
* theme of being trapped in some way
