Please, PLEASE ignore the sedevacantists in this thread. They are completely wrong. The seat is not empty. Paul VI was a valid pope, as was John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and as is Francis. They weren't all GOOD popes, but they are all valid popes. Sedevacantism is a heresy. As a trad Catholic I know once put it, "They're Protestants LARPing as Catholics."

If you want to learn about the Catholic Church, learn about the actual Catholic Church, the one with 1.2 billion members.

It all makes you wonder if the secret to "civilization" as we understand it in the West isn't ultimately Christianity. Think of all the really good and decent non-Westerners you know. I bet they're Christian, or grew up in a Christian family, or grew up around Christians in some other way.

Even if the West is more atheistic now, its framework and basic ideas have Christian origins and roots, which explains why the West continues to be so distinctively "civilized."

Nowadays Weird Catholic Twitter is full-on monarchist and integralist, which I find very interesting in its implications for the future of the Church. It's not a matter of culture. It's a matter of the Church as the carrier of Christ's will, the Church as God's instrument on Earth. You can't just be satisfied with the trappings and physical elements of Catholicism. You have to actually believe what the Church teaches, obey what it tells you to do, and participate in the Sacraments it administers. To truly be Catholic demands an active faith, a belief in the Resurrection and all that flows from it. Otherwise you're no better than an atheist. That's why newly converted believers in Ghana and Vietnam are superior to people in Italy and Spain whose families have been Catholic for generations, but who don't believe and don't practice. Belief and practice are all that are important. The culture is just a side effect.
