Will I be able to appreciate it if I can't read French? How much is lost in translation?

So when people say they've read this do they really mean they've just read Swann's Way?

I have a really intelligent friend and his favorite book is In Search of Lost Time. He loves to talk about it a lot and incidentally I can really feel the passion he has for this book. This made me wanna read it and so I did. Started reading Swann's Way, read about 20 or so pages so far and this is incomprehensible to me. Is this normal or am I just really dumb? I mean, I can understand what's being said and all, but it just feels disconnected or too unimportant, I don't know how to feel. There were no characters introduced other than the narrator and him talking about his grandmothers, aunts, parents a little bit. This honestly doesn't feel like a literature book so far.

Does this book just have a really slow start or is it just a collection of thinkings from the narrator? Is it normal to feel overwhelmed by it? Thanks.

In Search of Lost Time thread. What's your favorite part, what are your favorite scenes and who are your favorite characters?
Also, where can I download the third volume but with Carter's annotations? I can't find it anywhere on the internet.

Is it actually a worthy read?

What is it with frogs and writing long boring-ass books?

Is In Search of Lost Time worth reading in English? How does the Moncrieff translation compare to Proust's original text? Is it worth learning French to read the entire novel?

Was Proust a phenomenologist? And if so, is ISoLT a good introduction to phenomenology
