Myself i tried to get into fantasy outside lotr and a couple friends wouldn't stfu about wheel of time.

wow was that a wakeup call. the literal gayest book, i stopped about 2/3 in.

How much slogging will I have to do if I plan to read the whole wheel of time series in one run? High/epic fantasy generally isn't known for it's brevity, but Jordan's books seem to have a bit of notoriety for it.

Is it worth it? Is it something I should read just by way of being a fan of fantasy?

I found a near complete set of this series in a local charity shop. Which ones are good? Does the series become terrible at any point? I got the first three, is it worth getting any others?

Is Wheel of Time as good as they say?

I remember a time when it was recommended alongside Lord of the Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire.

I'm a little more than halfway through this; last chapter Egwene, Perrin, and wolfman separated from the gypsy hippies. It's alright so far, but I've seen people praise it to high heaven and I'm not seeing it. It seems like standard fantasy to me. Does something set it apart, or will set it apart? Granted, the story got better after the group separated, but I'm still struggling to get attached to the characters; I only really like Perrin and the haughty loli so far. Also, I hear most of the fourteen books are shit.

Does this entire goddamn series count? I've read through all 14 books twice now, and the first ten-thirteen or so four times.

100 pages in and not a single mention of shit, piss or rape. It's like he wasn't even trying to compete with GRRM, what a loser.

So far I've seen nothing but all the fantasy cliches I absolutely despise plus some of the worst pacing in any novel I've ever read. Robert Jordan is the exact opposite of someone like Alfred Bester.

There's 14 books of this? And they get longer? And I've had WoT fanatics tell me it SLOWS DOWN?

It's a shame because I find the world fairly interesting when the names of people and places aren't totally obnoxious (Mountains of Mist? Really? Nynaeve?)

Dunno if this is relevant but my favourite work of fantasy is The Silmarillion (which I think is honestly better than LotR).

Someone also told me to read the first three books then just skip to the last three. That seems like a strange idea.

Is this shit worth it? Is the series worth it? I wanted to read it for a while but just found out how big it was and while I'm not a complete pussy I want to be sure it's time well invested

About three years ago I tried reading this book. Fantasy buffs tend to give this series praise and say that the characters and story are great, but I got about 600 pages through the dang thing, and I felt like nothing really happened. The plot felt like a Tolkien rip-off, the characters felt one-dimensional, and the women were just plain bitches. The writing was kinda' lovely though. I put the book down and read other fantasy books, like The Name of the Wind, A Game of Thrones, and The Way of Kings, and I thoroughly enjoyed those. Now that the Wheel of Time series is done, I must know...is it really worth reading?

I've seriously been considering picking the first book up again and reading through the entire series. Perhaps there was something I missed?
