Does Guenon ever address the popular claim that totemism is the earliest form of religiosity? The evolutionary approach to religion, which is still widely accepted though rarely conceptualised in such a way now, seems to be irreconcilable with his model of metaphysical truths being denigrated over time.

If he isn't an orientalist himself, he is at least a pure product of Orientalism. His entire shtick is based on the fetished thought that eastern thought is something more deeper and mystical than we in the west can relate too. This interpretation of the ""orient"" was beneficial for the large western powers and imperialists of the time since they can sell the narrative that Easterns aren't hung up on material conditions, they find meaning in higher spiritual matters. If easterners aren't interested in their material conditions, any larger power is free to exploit them for resources and material wealth.

Where Guenon is a complete retard is as he himself adapts this false narrative and believes it to be better. Don't get me wrong, I think Guenon has good takes on religion, symbolism, and a great critique of modern civilization, but he is completely blind to the fact that his "solution" to modern civilization is itself made up by the west. If he was aware of this he would've maybe been a proper respected scholar instead of just a meme.

This is not the case under the caste system traditionally but at the top levels the Brahmins were usually expected to abstain from alcohol, meat-eating, to remain completely chaste outside of marriage etc. In the dharma-sastra texts of Hinduism that law out societal norms and caste-rules it actually gives more severe consequences for breaking laws if you are a Brahmin than if you are lower caste. It makes it easier to fall into hedonism largely only in modern society where many of the most gifted instead of guiding society and instructing people in religion just compete with each other in accumulating wealth etc. In a deeply religious traditional society the gifted who abuse their gifts to purse hedonism and wealth were much more likely to be ostracized and despised by their fellow intellectuals and achievers. This is why in ancient China money-lenders were seen as below peasants and why in ancient India Brahmins were prohibited from money-lending and why the money-lenders were subject to many restrictions and regulations that limited their power.

Buddhism is gone. What we see now is not traditional real buddhism. Vajrayana is extremely mixed with bön and other tribal religions. Theravada, although is the one that kept the oldest texts from canon buddhism, is not traditional, since Sariputta's abidhamma is a distortion of the principle of annica. Mahayana is the older and related to the original root of buddhism, but suffers from bad chinese translations of the canon. None of them are really the *traditional* buddhism.

Christianism is also gone. Greek orthodox is the closest of original christianity.

Islam was never traditional. It was imposed by herd violence and in origin it's a weird distortion of both judaism and christianism.

Hinduism never existed. There was brahmanism. There was samkhya. There was yoga. There was saktism. There was shaivism. There was bhakti. What you believe to be hinduism is a mix of many ancient traditions, all of which are forever gone.

Traditions are gone. This is why we live in Kali Yuga, which is not an age we live since thousands of years, but a relatively recent happening.
