What is your approach to choosing which version of a book to read?

Especially when it comes to old books (100+ years), I'm always caught up in the billions of versions and what has been added/removed/whanot, and if I see a 1924 version of a 1899 book, I might be afraid it has been shortened to fit in a certain constraint.
Then I find the 1963 edition called "The complete edition", but I have to compare it with the "Anniversary edition" from 1999, which has some illustrations, but only the 1985 version claims to have all the removed chapters, not to mention the DEFINITIVE edition released in 2014, which is now obsoleted by the 2021 with....

I think you get the point. How do I avoid the autism and just read the original text, sure that it will be in the wholest version possible, without going in a rabbit hole?

>Subvocalizing brainlets, basically
But literally how does one not subvocalize while reading? Am I defective?

How does one know which of Islam or Christianity is true? I had a weird experience and now I know that either one of these must be true. Is it somehow reconcilable that both are?

I need to read more perhaps...

Hello /lit/, I recently read Burton's translation of the Arabian Nights and I want to know its Western equivalent. Grimms' Fairy Tales springs to mind but what translation is the best and what other books are similar in style and story?

I'll probably get shit on for this, but does anyone else have a problem with starting books, enjoying them, and burning through them for the first few days, and then getting tired of them, and just leaving them on the desk to glare at you for weeks until you finish it or put it away? I force myself to read them, mildly enjoy what I read, but then as soo as I finish I don't want to pick it up again.
Is it a weak attention span? That doesn't seem to be it. Does anyone else have this problem?

>formalism is the only real way to analyze a text, theory is just wank

What does that have to do with OP's post?
