I want to read The Bible because of how important and influential it is. Is this a good version for beginners? I know people argue over translations all the time, but I know this is one of the oldest and most widely read and distributed translations of the Bible.

I don't understand why anyone would buy the Penguin Classics edition when the superior Oxford World Classics edition exists. I'm talking specifically regarding paperback copies.

I'm an atheist and I to see where all those famous quotes came from and improve my English.
I was thinking about Oxford's KJV (picrel), but the /lit/ archives also mention Norton's KJV and Oxford's NRSV.
Any suggestion?

I've got picrel as well as the NIV Student Bible, which I find to be a quite a satisfying combination even if incongruous.

What is it with people who say you shouldn't read the bible from start to finish? How else would you read it if you want to go through the whole thing anyway?

Is this a good version for someone who is an interested newcomer (I want to read and discover The Bible more from a curiosity approach not a religious one -at least for now-)?

Reading the bible with a group of friends. Basically half christian, half atheist/agnostic. We are pretty agreed that we want to read and discuss with scholarly motivations rather than religious...

Any experiences with a more academically bent bible study group?
Any tips for reading groups in general?

alright, I've realised that the more I read books like Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist, Stendhal's The Red and the Black and Gibbon's Decline and Fall, the more and more I've started start to genuinely dislike Christianity, the Church and the sorts of people in it. However I've also become way more interested in reading the Bible and seeing what it's all about for myself. Anyone else feel like this?

I really don't get what the big deal is. The dialouge is wooden at best, and the love stories are stapled on. The gay zombie knife fight at the top of a waterfall is almost worth slogging through the Book of Obadiah, but I admit I just skipped ahead. The One True Faith? Maybe for the Reader's Digest crowd, but I just couldn't buy it.

Are there King James Bible equivalents in other western languages in terms of pure literary influence? So many KJV phrases made their way into English written works that it's kind of a weird experience to actually read the thing and see all those lines and references pop up one after the other. Do other languages have anything like this? Is there a French KJV that got quoted and re-quoted by French writers, for example?
