>Infinite plot armor until author decides It's Time
>Telegraph every arc and plot point well in advance, characters "just know" when they'll die, always with a purpose
>Contrived, anti-realistic situations always, worse than a typical DnD game even
>Infinitely ramping Power Levels and Ages. "Just add another level for excitement!"
>Letter salad names, always with apostrophes [namefag]
>Convoluted magic systems are the only innovation you'll find
>Always a The One or Captain of Light or somesuch author powerfantasy insert that obviously wins in the end
>Every other character a One in a Million Supermage/god such that it makes power feel meaningless
>DragonballZ in the Middle Ages basically
>Always dragons and an Elven Elder Race or two and a dozen+ polytheistic gods
>"Dude check out my amazing worldbuilding!" plus some cliche narratives tacked on
Why is fantasy prone to this? I won't get into the GotM-specific issues, as this is constant in the genre, with few exceptions.

Is it that genre authors with fresh ideas gravitate to scifi, so fantasy just becomes a swamp of middling talent DMs that don't understand how grounding a story and forcing characters to actually work through issues is enjoyable in a way that deus ex'ing their problems away with "surprise magic item" or "well actually he's a double secret supermage" or "infinity plot armor contrivance" isn't, and that really really really want you to learn all about their amazing new worldbuilding while copying every other worldbuilding and narrative example out there for the nth time with some twists?

I just want a comfy story with good writing that's not modern or futuristic.
LotR = great
GoT-ASOS = amazing
WoT = issues but worth it, despite most of above tropes

What next?
