Vance tried to serve in WWII but his eyesight was too poor so he ended up in the merchant marines. I think he was in Pearl Harbor shortly before the attack working in a shipyard and learning Japanese--I remember something about him writing kanji inside naval hulls for practice.

The surprise for me is that he would bother to express an opinion within this context.

I see Frank Herbert is missing, of those I know to have been friends of Vance. Poul Anderson is present as is Robert Silverberg.
