Are there any contemporary cultural critiques, fiction or otherwise, that truly grasp how apocalyptically fucked everything is right now?

I've been reading early 20th century cultural criticism and polemics and such, and it occurs to me that these people were much smarter, much more lucid and aware of how frightening their situation was, and much more willing to ring the bells in panic and call for drastic solutions, despite the situation back then being much LESS terrifying and there still being at least a little hope that things would get better. If all these critics of mass society, intellectual levelling, technology run amok and so on could see things now, they'd probably just blow their brains out immediately. Everything that was upsetting them is now cartoonishly, exponentially worse.

So where are all those types now? Is Houellebecq really what we get? Where are the Houellebecqs who are literally panicking at how fucked we are? Where is our Jacques Ellul? Have we been neutered?
