There's a demonstrable difference in the goals, behaviors and attitudes of authoritarians/collectivists and those of individualists. That's where the distinction of the Left and Right come from in the first place.
That a bunch of people (many of whom would be politically uneducated, as the masses tend to be) would all agree in the nonsense concept that two people who chiefly disagree on basic principles of behavior and authority would somehow end up with perfectly identical systems of governance is just moronic. That both the allegedly Left- and Right-wing collective authority systems of the 20th century stem from the exact same source is further proof that they aren't separate or distinct entities.
Authoritarianism IS Fascism IS Communism. There's only barely a distinction at all. Historically, this is why both the Nazi party and the Soviets acknowledged that each others' supporters were ideologically prone to caving to either system and needed to be insulated from the others' propaganda - their systems of thought lay along the exact same lines, not paradoxically opposite but identical ones.
