MN 57 and MN 129 both touch on the animal realm and the implication is more or less that animal behavior will get you an animal birth, so a very patterned sort of craving for things without giving much thought would lead to not being able to give it much thought, if you want to see it that way. And an animal's umwelt is quite locked around what it needs to survive, which makes animal consciousness of the world very phenomenally different than our own, like a blind tick sensing warm blood, or the non-binocular prey animals needing a huge field of vision.
