Reading books and watching movies are fundamentally different experiences. Movies interact directly with your senses, and in a way, the stimula to the senses that movies use functions almost like a crutch to help carry the viewer through the picture. Books don't interact with your senses, you need to will yourself through the entirety of the text without the aid of anything, and as such it is a much more intimate experience that movies can't replicate as such.

Obviously this does not mean that all books are better than any movie, just that the experience of reading a book is different.
