>My wife says that it's a woman but I agree with you on being a man cause the megadungeons and the traps are a very male nerd thing. But my wife likes it a lot so I don't know what to make of your "male gaze" comment
If one reads a lot of fantasy, written by male and females, he sees diffrence in character writing, story focus or themes that authors use, depending on gender. TWI has a lot of female characters, but they are written in a very 'male way', by which I mean they are focused on their professions and jobs, serve grand ideas, etc. They are very abstract-oriented. The author is almost afraid of writing actual romantic relationships or mundane drama.

Also, the main character is a 'cool girl,' an idealized portrayal of a lively, vivacious, fun and kind young woman. This is something women may like to read, but not something women write. Female characters in TWI are written in a way that appeals to MEN, not in a sexual way, but on a personality level. That's why I say the story is pure Male Gaze.

>Not sure why the author would split narrative focus and squander so much good will with Erin's story to instead focus on this uninteresting slag who's miraculously good at everything and loved by everyone while being an insipid cunt.
Loved by everyone...? Volume 1 Ryoka was an unsufferable cunt hated by everyone and their mother. And if you think Ryoka is some genius good at everything, then you haven't been playing attention. She's the kind of person that knows a lot of shallow stuff to show you she's better than you, but doesn't actually know anything substantial on any topic. An arrogant redditor, basically.
Personally, I actually liked Ryoka's PoVs more in V1 due to how insufferable Erin was. I was losing brain cells reading her selfless retardness.

Thankfully, both Ryoka and Erin improve drastically. And if you hate...you will be satisfied soon enough.

>Genuinely just sitting down to read it (again), I'll update a first impression sometime later today. You've read it?
Yeah, I'm one of TWI bros, caught up on all the 10 million words. I assume you're going to to do the audiobook instead of reading? I've heard only good opinions about Andrea's work, so I hope you'll have a good time listening to the first volume.

The first volume is an interesting beast to look at as a long-time TWI reader, almost a different story. It has all of TWI's best qualities in their nascent stages, strong focus on characters, distinct voices, raw emotions, tragedy and happiness, with classic fantasy storytelling put in a modern framework. All of that, but crude, lacking the refinement of an experienced author. But you'll likely notice the already present passion of the author that has only grown with time.

It's always hard for me to describe TWI here, as a fan it's hard to talk about it objectively. I don't want to give you either too big expectations or to excuse the story's early flaws, so I'll just hope you enjoy it for what it was at the time.
